A week after his confrontation with James MacLean, Arnold left his office and headed for the car park: Carmela Cacciatore was due at Newcastle Airport at two in the afternoon, and Arnold drove down from Morpeth to pick her up. The plane arrived on time: he caught sight of Carmela, wearing an unsuitable low-cut flowered dress, coming through with her luggage trolley and he raised a hand. To his surprise she abandoned the trolley and hurried towards him, coming forward with a wide smile and arms extended. He found himself crushed against her expansive breasts, as she hugged him enthusiastically.
âI am so happy to see you!â
Slightly embarrassed, Arnold persuaded her to release her grip, recovered the trolley, collected his car park ticket and led the way out, as she walked beside him chattering excitedly.
Arnold drove her to her hotel in Alnwick; she registered, and went up with her luggage to her room. Arnold ordered himself a cup of coffee and sat in the lounge while she did some basic unpacking, and changed her clothes after the flight. When she came down to join him he suggested they might as well go immediately to the office in Morpeth so that she could meet Karen Stannard. Carmela was now more soberly dressed in a dark trouser suit. Arnold wondered how Karen would regard her.
âWhat brings you to the UK anyway? You didnât explain in your email,â Arnold said as they swung out on the A1 towards Morpeth.
She flashed him a radiant, almost coquettish smile. âTo see you again, my friend, of course. But, more seriously, the arrangements have now been made for the Minister to visit againâhe arrives in Newcastle in a few daysâ timeâin order that the formalities are completed. You know how these politicians are.â
âFormalities?â
âThe arrangements for mutual collaboration over the prevention of looting of artefacts. And the signing of protocols, and what do you say? Capitulations. The signatures for establishing the teams of experts, and the Italian government financing of the arrangements.â She settled comfortably into the passenger seat of his car. âI managed to get myself invited to join the delegation, so I came early, in order that we might have some time together. I have more examples of artefacts to show you: they have been put on CDs, so that we can look at them together on the computer, and I can offer additional explanations regarding provenance.â She eyed him mischievously. âYou have the technology, I trust?â
âWe have the technology,â he smiled.
âItalian?â
âJapanese.â
Karen Stannard did not indulge in her usual power games: Arnold was not left kicking his heels in the outer office when they arrived. He was invited in immediately he brought his guest to the appropriate floor, and Karen uncoiled herself sinuously from her chair, came forward to greet Carmela, extending her hand and smiling warmly. She was wearing a cool white shirt under the dark, elegantly cut jacket of her trouser suit. It was of a markedly better cut than Carmelaâs, though the contrast might have been due to their relative sizes.
